Rachel has a diverse sporting background, having competed in three different sports at international level.

At the age of 16, Rachel achieved her first international medal at the Modern Pentathlon Youth Olympics (formally known as Olympic Hopefuls).  She prides herself on having  started the running phase back in 14th position, and catapulting herself into bronze medal position, curtesy of her 10min20 3km xc run.  She also competed at the Modern Pentathlon European Championships the following year, being part of the silver medal winning GB Team.

A few years later, after completing her physiotherapy degree,  Rachel then focussed on the fencing discipline, with coaching from army coach Steven Davey, and then British number 1 Chris Howser, she regularly competed at National Level with strong placings in popular events like the Welsh Open and the Slough Open, which often attract entries in excess of 100 competitors..  She also achieved a silver medal at the Folkestone International, a well-subscribed domestic international competition, just missing out on the gold medal to a strong German competitor in the final.

International sport then took a backseat from the ages of 22-35 whilst she focussed on her physiotherapy career.  All the while continuing with her childhood passion of showjumping at national, grassroots level.  It is a hope for the future that showjumping will become Rachel's fourth sport that she has competed at International Level.

Rachel is currently a very active member of the ABPU.  She took up powerlifting very much by accident at the age of 36 after being encouraged by a friend whilst training at The Forest Gym in Crawley.  She has since gotten the bug, and trains regularly at her home gym (built during covid), but still loves to return to "Forest" for some of her training.  The powerlifting escalated quickly with her first competition being extremely average and not worthy of much mention, to 5 years later, receiving praise from Gavin Bilton (World's Strongest Man competitor) for her massive 150kg deadlift at a competition at the NEC,  (To put this into context, this lift was achieved at 52kg bodyweight and 41 years old, and pound-for-pound was the strongest female deadlift of the whole weekend.)   Rachel has competed at a number of World and European Championships, and holds deadlift world records in the 52kg sub-masters category as well as the 56kg masters 1 category.

Rachel looks to continue to compete in powerlifting, with the ultimate goal being a triple bodyweight deadlift in competition.  She has already come tantalisingly close to achieving this feat in competition, but couldn't get the lockout required.

These sporting achievements have all happened despite a congenital hip dysfunction known as femoroacetabular impingement.  She has had two "keyhole" operations, and after a recent MRI scan, is now in need of a third.  She credits her physiotherapy career and subsequent in-depth understanding of the body and muscular function for her ability to keep training and lifting such heavy weights despite a less than ideal clinical picture.  She can help you to achieve the same.  In terms of exercise, and when the body is struggling, she works to the mantra "don't avoid; adapt".  In most cases, we really should not be fully avoid exercising when injured, just adapt the exercises for something that your body CAN do.

Physiotherapy Background

Rachel graduated from The University of the West of England, Bristol in 2004 with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy.  She then worked for 3 years in the NHS initially in a junior rotational role, then as a senior musculoskeletal physiotherapist.  She then worked for Nuffield Health at both their Guildford Hospital, and at their remote clinic at the Civil Aviation Authority, Gatwick.

In 2011, Rachel completed her post-graduate diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy at The Royal Veterinary College in London.  This enables her to work a dual-role as a human physiotherapist and an equine physiotherapist.  For more information on her equine work, please visit www.equi-measures.com.

Looking to avoid the long M25 commutes, in 2011 she moved to work in a self-employed role at Linkfield Physiotherapy Clinic in Redhill, Surrey, where she still works 3 days a week, alongside her equine physiotherapy work and her gym based physiotherapy and strength coaching work.

In 2024, Rachel achieved her Level 4 qualification in Strength & Conditioning Coaching, which slots in perfectly alongside her many years involvement in elite level sport, and physiotherapy.  Don't be put off by this though, Rachel is just as happy coaching the individual looking to improve their health and fitness levels as part of a healthy lifestyle as she is sports people.

She describes her interpersonal approach as "taking the job seriously, but never myself".  She is happy to enjoy a chat and some light-hearted banter, as long as the job is being done to a high standard.
